Constantly needs reinstalling
I would give this more stars as when it is working, I find it really useful. The problem is that it often just stops working and takes you as far as the pin screen and when you enter the pin it does nothing. It might be because its an update (in which case why not bring up a message) but even you update it you often have to reinstall and go through the whole process again. I have easily reinstalled this more than half a dozen times in the last few weeks.

Potential not yet attained
Ok if you are a uk citizen and have a residence in the uk it is potentially great. But very limited if you live and reside abroad, you can not fill in online tax returns via the app or the gov.uk website. You can not upload documents to the tax office either. And worse still the amount of cookies and data analysis is absolutely over the top. Over 50 it would appear even if you said no to tracking. Seems every document they send abroad has the message saying it is possible to file online then you try and get a notice at the end of filling not possible to submit. Seems you need to learn how to do it from Scandinavian systems. So much more efficient private and secure.

No person to person contact details!
I desperately need to correct a misdirected payment for my self assessment but there is no option to email or phone for direct person to person contact.

Couldn't sign in because I couldn't get past the page for different ways to check my identity. It kept offering a list which included two forms of identity which I could provide but when I clicked "Continue" it went back to a page that only offered three forms of identity which I could only provide one item from and the thought of phoning a help line just makes me depressed. All I wanted to do was check if my tax code had changed, very frustrating.

I can't seem to be able to tell you that I have retired and no longer have a salary. My tax code is not correct, I am paying far too much tax on a very small pension currently.

Waste of time on hold for nearly an hour. Been on hold from 4.30 after 4 minutes of the automated speech nearly 1hour and they close at 6pm so looks like no one willing to take the call because they are finishing soon disgrace . Quick to say owe money but no one to talk to properly. It can't be this busy. Also I have rang in the morning as soon as they open and had to wait 30 minutes then as well. Hmrc is a joke and disgraceful not even worth a star. Now coming upto 55 minutes on hold

Any genuine improvements on the horizon?
So much wrong with this app and the website or systems it is linked to that I couldn't possibly detail them all here. Version 16.5.0 boasts: “We've updated the Money screen so you can easily find the new service to pay for gaps in your National Insurance record.” Really? Where? Were HMRC able to find the payment service themselves when they checked it? It doesn't seem to have noticeably changed from the previous version where checks on NI gaps lead to a screening system of potentially impossible to accurately answer questions leading to zero options to pay online. Meanwhile, a check on all past PAYE years just goes on showing “The data for this tax year is not currently available”. But never mind, our new version now has the amazing new feature of a link so we can tell HMRC if anything is wrong with those screens … as if they did not know they were likely to be wrong! Other previous bad experience has surrounded HMRC ignorance of input of updated estimated income via the app. An issue of the app showing one's total of NI full years as greater than a count-up of individual years has finally been fixed by deletion of the inaccurate total leaving us to more accurately do our own count-up. As we are now in the 2020s not the 1980s, isn't it about time HMRC had staff that could program systems with at least the skills displayed by programmers of some of the top banking apps rather than it appearing as if former programmers for the Post Office could have done an equal job.
