The Economist - Latest Quality Issues
iOS

Broken
The app is unbelievably slow. You have to click on an article a dozen times for it to load. It has made the app unusable which is sad because I love it.

Fix the app!
The journalism is great. The app is not. Sometimes it just crashes when reading mid article. It's a bit of a 50/50 when opening the app whether it is going to lag when going from the home page to the weekly section. Even though I download the edition, not all images/graphs appear offline for me. This was not the case with the previous version of the app. The home page is a nice addition, with up to date information and very current articles. However, please fix the app!

iPad app slow
Every time I change the orientation in the iPad the app freezes for a good 5 seconds
Android

The content is great, but the app is almost unusable. Sometimes you have to wait seconds until the next interaction is possible. Battery life is also disproportionately affected.

Where is Babbage?
I regret that The Economist is merging the podcast titles into one.

Great content, terrible app. Really slow to load, crashes frequently, and often non responsive, waiting 10s seconds for button presses to register. A bit ridiculous, given it just needs to show text. Shame, as the content is great.

Slow. Does not work offline even when content is downloaded

Content is fabulous as always. App is less so.
Can recommend the excellent journalism of The Economist without reservation. However, I know that they hold themselves to highly standards, so I will venture some complaints about the app. My use is primarily for the audio edition (again, it is excellent), which was previously available via RSS and thus accessible via any podcast app. Overcast and Apple Podcasts were very good options, as they supported offline playback and customization, including setting the track skip (forward/ back) functions to skip a few seconds (up to half a minute) instead of to the beginning of a podcast “chapter.” There are more gradations of playback speed and of course the ability to collect multiple podcasts in a playlist for convenient playback within a single app. You give up a lot to move to the dedicated Economist app - a move that is not optional now that the RSS delivery is being phased out. The added features - the printed articles and graphics are only a couple of taps away, content not included in the audio version, alerts, content bookmarks, easier access to a particular section or previous issue - are not quite worth the trouble. I can easily access the Economist's mobile-friendly web site for ancillary information or to review details of an article I've listened to. With better controls (the skip functions move to the beginning of the next chapter or - inexplicably- the beginning of the chapter *preceding* the current chapter; this despite the +/- 10 sec controls the app provides on the iOS Lock Screen) this would be a tolerable trade off. As it stands now, my instinctive triple press to back up 15 seconds now leaps back ~3-12 minutes. I don't need to listen to the last article again in addition to however much of the current article has already played just to catch some detail I missed in the last sentence or two. Also, the automatic login and sync function when the app launches should have a timeout. If I have poor or no network connectivity, at least let the app time out gracefully. That would allow me listen to audio content that I've already downloaded, instead of reveling in the spinning the progress wheel that is interminably displayed while the app steadfastly refuses to open.
